When Jeff Owens was injured at the beginning of the Georgia Southern game to start the last football season, the Georgia Bulldogs was left without the senior defensive tackle for the remainder of the year. A medical redshirt will allow Owens to return for a final year on the team, but spending the entirety of 2008-09 rehabbing a knee injury has given the Fort Lauderdale native a while to collect his thoughts.
As a means of expressing those ideas, Owens started his own blog. If it's easy enough that I can create one, then Owens should have no trouble.
'Jeff Owens: The Real Deal' boasts that it contains "All There is to Know About Georgia Football." That is not surprising considering that he has gotten to know the program well after almost five years. One of the most personable players on the team, the majority of the site's posts are interviews of fellow players, including DE Rod Battle, OL Josh Davis, and QB Joe Cox.
Most recently, Owens wrote an entry about LB Marcus Washington. Like Owens, Washington missed the past season for medical reasons. According to information on the blog, Washington is the only married player on the team, and even has two young children. Like Owens, Washington will bring a great deal of experience to the Georgia defense.
Normally, a site like this could be a publicity issue for a prestigious university. The coaching staff will certainly be keeping a close eye on all entries, but because of Owens' reputation, they don't think the site will become a problem. In fact, jeffowens95.blogspot.com has gotten a great deal of positive response. It seems that Owens' fame on the football field has translated to fame in cyberspace. The site currently has 83 registered followers.
Readers of the blog are undoubtedly seeking a better insight into the life of a real college athlete, and Owens is happy to oblige. One post entitled 'What Does It Mean to Wear the G?' addresses his thoughts about school pride and representing the University.
Owens does not disappoint in those areas either.
